As Johnis, Silvie, Billos, and Darsal continue their quest for the four still missing Books of History, Billos makes a decision that has devastating consequences for himself and his companions, especially the devoted Darsal.Publishers Description
One of the chosen has gone renegade.
Turning his back on all that he once believed, Billos does the forbidden and enters into a Book of History. He lands in a reality as foreign to him as water is to oil--a place called Paradise, Colorado. He has strange new powers given to him courtesy of a mysterious figure known as Marsuvees Black.
The chosen four have survived the desert, escaped the Black Forest, battled the Horde, and added a spirited refugee to their number. But nothing has prepared them for the showdown that Billos, the renegade, is luring them into.

Dekker's best so far...NOT Aug 10, 2009
While I personally think Jonathan's analysis of the characters is a little over the top there are a few comments that are dead-on.
This series is my first exposure to Dekker. I enjoyed "Chosen" and "Infidel" and could hardly wait to get to "Renegade." With 10 chapters left I am considering moving on to other, more promising, works. I am shocked that other readers are giving this book high marks and calling it "Dekker's best so far."
I can only imagine that the white room is lifted from another series that I have not read. It is out of context in this book and puts the characters in situations where they behave in a manner inconsistent with their personalities. The idea that so much paper was wasted on Billos believing the machine was a "spider" and virtually nothing on the concept of Darsal, Karas, and Papa strapping themselves into "DELL", illustrates Dekker's desire to get to what he wants to accomplish in this book at the expense of meeting the reader's needs. Even "Papa" would understand that.
There is a possibility that the shortcomings of the first 28 chapters will somehow be reversed by the end of this book; but, that can't propel this to "Dekker's best so far." When looking at all 6 books side by side, you wonder if the desire to make them the same width didn't result in necessary pages being left out.
This Will Make You Want to Re-read The Entire Series Again May 30, 2009
The Lost Books series brings you back to the Forest, and makes you want to pick up Black and read the Circle Books (can you really call it a trilogy now?) all over again. These are the stories that make Dekker...well, Dekker!
I won't recap the entire story here, but will encourage you to pick these books up and enjoy the ride. They won't disappoint.
Fabulous series! Apr 4, 2009
My 10 year old just ravaged through this series! It was the only Dekker material she's read and she really loved it! Highly recommended for your readers!
30 missing pages... yeah Mar 18, 2009
Ok, so I'm on vacation in Missouri with my family. I've been waiting two months to read the third book in the series. 54 pages into it, it jumps to page 151. All of a sudden I wonder why I'm completely lost while reading. It takes me a while to recognize what has happened, but when I DO I start searching frantically for the missing pages. Turns out most of them show up later (50 page segments are usually consecutive, but completely out of order.) There are, however, a full 30 pages that are missing. Gone. Not printed. So, I'm unable to finish the book on vacation, or read the 4th book, which I've also brought along for the 12 hour drive home. Bummer...
